49 days after leaving Sureshot's tribe 15 days before discovering Blue Mountain
Evenstar reached out slender fingers and tried to trace where the unmoving star lay behind the thick clouds, light smears pasted against the darkening sky. The winds had harshened only a few minutes before dark had started to stretch across the woodland and her tribemates were still resting safe and warm in their makeshift dens. The wolves riled a bit beneath nearby trees, but regrouped and settled, waiting for the elf-friends' waking.
Sunsong had been so kind as to reinforce the sparse higher branches that she rested on, the plantshaper encouraging the boughs to bend and harden slightly to accept the tanner's weight. Evenstar sometimes thought far ahead, dreaming sometimes of the roost she would build herself at the new holt, in a tall sturdy tree with a clear view of the stars and tribe. Maybe if a new Father Tree was born, she could claim top.
Evenstar smiled at the daydream (or nightdream as it was) and sat up, pushing the long fur she had dragged up with her aside and feeling gust of brisk wind against her slender frame. As she sniffed the rush of new scents, she leaned too far, and not keeping a good balance on the center branch, found one of the weaker bunch slipping from under her right leg. "Oh!" Evenstar grabbed for anything, but only caught the edge of her blanket at she tumbled sideways off the nest. She yelped, a sound barely audible to even the wolves below, though a watchful Farpace leapt immediately to the tree's roots, whining frantically.
Grimacing, Evenstar had caught herself by the crook of her left arm, and she hung feel rather foolish as she contemplated getting back into the mess she had made of the nest.

The Song was becoming softer, slowing a bit; night was nearly upon them, and thus it was nearly time to get up. Silent stirred a little, but still drifted between asleep and awake, warm and comfortable as the branches he was draped across rocked gently in the rising wind.
Then something shifted above him, and the quiet one drowsily opened his eyes to make sure nothing was going to fall on him.
Evenstar was hanging from a branch about an elf-body-length in the branches over towards the right, looking disgruntled. Silent sat up a little, frowning, and shook his head to clear it, without much success. **[deep gray sleepiness] [foggy awareness] Are you all right?/[faint orange concern]** he lock-sent, a bit jumbled, and rubbed his eyes.

Evenstar was startled by the deep tapestry of a sending that hit her as she swung her other arm round the nest branch, long legs still dangling rather ridiculously. She huffed, flushed by her preoccupation, and locksent in return. **I'm fine, just playing treewee for a moment.** Her sending was lightly touched with self-annoyance and embarassment. **Sorry to wake you. No need to get anyone else up while there's still rest to be had.**
Evenstar leaned on her hands, cautious to the creaking, and began pulling herself up.

**I was almost up,** Silent returned, watching Evenstar move. She seemed to have a grip on things, literally, so apparently there was no more need for worry. Maybe. **Did you have a bad dream [unpleasant thoughts murky light untrustworthy sounds fear]?** he inquired, then blushed slightly. **No, never mind/[forget it]. You don't have to tell me.** He wrapped his bedfur and mantle about himself a bit more snugly, and shifted so he was nestled a bit more securely against the tree's trunk.

**No bad dreams, just sad ones. My near tumble was just...me.** Evenstar sent back, flopping over the side of the nest on her stomach and pulling all the way up onto her knees. **I dream of the old holt lately. The dreams didn't start till an eight of days ago. I dream of the little things I miss.** Rolling onto her side, she gazed down at him. **They are silly things. Sometimes the dreams make me happy, sometimes not. Dreams are made of dreamstuff, I suppose, there's nothing I could do for it.** Shyly, she sent, **What do you miss?**
The question was silly for a Wolfrider to ask, when they should be so busy in the Now, she knew, but she was eager to share some of her awkward feelings about leaving the holt. Maybe Silent could understand her inability to quit thinking...

Silent tilted his head, watching the tanner carefully and listening closely. It was rare anyone chose to open up to him, so he didn't want to disappoint. It certainly sounded as if Evenstar had been fretting a bit, and he did indeed understand.
The silver-eyed elf would return her question with honesty. **Mother/[Heartstorm deep indigo strong thoughts fierce proud hot wolf-blood] [tenderness],** he began, with a dim memory of being sang to and rocked in the huntress' arms as a cub, and the feelings of safety, warmth and comfort associated with that memory slipping out. **Father/[Lightstone magic in his soul] [brown-gold scent of stone] [steadying influence kind words sharp mind].** He projected the memory of his sire bringing him a bird and just sitting with him in silent support, after the object of a childhood crush had turned Silent aside with harsh words.
**Hoarfrost/[little brother always out there with others] [dark eyes sharp teeth wide smile scent of frost] [biting sarcasm easy camaraderie with everyone else] [silver-gray].** Silent paused for the barest instant before the next answer came almost unbidden. **Longmane/[such grace such beauty such fire in her heart] [dancing, always dancing through life with happiness loving freely] [brilliant purple] [teasing words warm skin precious friendship beloved lovemate]- [out of reach forgetting him mother-scent life-scent such joy in Recognition]-**
The elf cut himself off with an effort, momentarily leaving a black space where his thoughts had been. **Sorry/[dull red-gray embarrassment]; I think I said too much/[said unimportant things]** he "whispered".

**Lovemates are not unimportant!** Evenstar defended, startled at Silent's shyness. Her own rare, left behind lovemates had been fairly distant from her, but were cherished nonetheless. She had never wished for a lifemate from them and their partings from her as she chose to follow Sureshot's daughter were quiet and pleasant. They would have found a new furmate quickly. **And do not be ashamed for wanting Recognition, it has brought elves nothing but life and joy since the High Ones!**

Silent jerked, luminous eyes widening as he looked at Evenstar in astonishment. He had not expected her to be so adamant about the subject, but it was true; Longmane had been one of the most important things in Silent's life for the turns of seasons they were lovemates. He had been absolutely besotted with the maiden who had been the first to ask exactly why he was always alone.
Evenstar had also cut to a matter that still bothered him: Longmane had Recognized Hoarfrost rather than him, when Silent had so desired it from her. It had been a shock, really. Wolfriders had no concept of "promiscuity" or "hedonism", but both would have applied to the black-haired dancer who constantly flitted from fur-mate to lovemate to friend; Longmane had been the last person anyone expected to Recognize anyone.
The memory of how it had felt to see that Recognition nearly slipped Silent's mind into sending, but he caught it in time. **[not ashamed]** he projected instead. **I'm just.... not used to talking [being open] about anything like this.**

**You only need talk if you want to. I am always here and Mist is always willing to listen to my griping.** Evenstar offered, tying her mussy undone hair into her typical fashion, tying the golden brown locks into two pieces at her neck and together at her hips.
**I didn't mean to be harsh about lovemates or Recognition, they are for oneself to decide. I was worried you were thinking something was wrong for it. There is no shame in talking about such things. For myself...as it goes. I don't think I seek anything or ever have. Being raised by my sister Firecat perhaps. She never wanted anything permanent, and she seemed so wise when I was young. Silly.** Evenstar shook her head, finished with her hair and her rambling sending, which carried a tone of sadness and wondering. **I am old enough to know what I want I think. Maybe.**
She laughed quietly, blue eyes glittering in the spreading dark. **You must think me strange for my mutterings. I do tend to babble. Longdusk hates it.**

**[humor] I'm not Longdusk. I don't mind/I like it,** Silent responded, lips twitching slightly in a little smile as he watched Evenstar fuss at her hair. **I'm listening, right? You should do the same: Talk if you need to talk [unburden yourself].**
He quieted for a moment, just breathing, just being, observing his tribe-mate through the haze of the Song that played with his perceptions. I could talk if I could think to [remember to], he thought a bit absently. I would talk if I thought I could explain, if I thought more people would listen. "And m-my mutteri-ings wou-would be st-s-stranger st-still," he whispered to himself without truly realizing he spoke aloud. His voice was extremely hoarse, the cracked words catching in his throat and shredding themselves on his teeth, but still understandable.
Silent closed his eyes for a moment and sighed.
