Wrapping the fur she had lain in and preparing herself for the night's exploration and hunting, Evenstar smiled at Silent's offer, but did not send or say anything. She had lain with her bundle of undyed, uncut skins that she had carried with her beneath her head, as she did every night. She gathered these as well.
"Hm?" Evenstar glanced at a strange sound from Silent, a rasping noise followed by a sigh. **Are you alright?** She smiled again, feeling rather foolish that she seemed to have bothered him a bit. 'I should keep my thoughts to myself and just let him talk!' She scolded herself. 'Why do I need to be so chattery?'
The tanner looked back to him. **Will you be hunting with us? The stars are beautiful and bright...** She nodded to the dark sky. **But there's still game to be had before I can have my fill of them.**

**I suppose,** Silent responded, letting his head loll back to gaze at the stars himself. Over there was the shape he thought could be a wolf, and up there, the uneven string of stars that made him think of a snake. Their light seemed to chime, so very distant in the Song they were barely "audible", but entrancing all the same.
Evenstar extended her offer, bringing his mind back to the present, and he shook his head. **I can't hunt/I'm horrible at trying to hunt, despite my silence,** he answered. **I can't focus on it , and the prey wanders off. I would just be a burden/useless [off-white resignation-matter-of-fact]. Wanderlust will usually bring me something if I'm hungry/[if I remember to eat].**

**Perhaps you just need practice.** Evenstar extended the chance to hunt again through her sending, sharing her personal thrill at the hunt, worried to leave him so alone to himself. **We are in strange territory, it isn't good to stay alone all the time.**
Farpace continued her muttered whining at the trunk, though significantly less frantic now that her elf-friend was safe with other elf and not hanging off the tall tree.

**I need a LOT of practice,** Silent replied, with a kind of self-derision that indicated how much, and unfolded himself from his fur and mantle. He didn't debate the part about being alone; it certainly hadn't done him too much good. Personally, he thought Evenstar was wasting her time, as had others who had tried to teach him to hunt, but she seemed so pleased by the idea, and it was so kind of her to offer.
**My spear is down below. I don't trust myself with a sling yet. Wherever Wanderlust is, she should be back soon if I call.**

**It's well enough you practice now.** Evenstar confirmed. **My bow is down below as well. We can hardly trust our weapons to survive this fall,** She patted the trunk with a small smile, **Especially with myself knocking the branches every which way.**
She judged the distance with cautious eyes. **You head down first and I will follow. I'll feel safest starting down from the branches you are on.** In her sending, she included her lingering embarassment. If it were another tribemate, they would likely scold her for whining on the past so unnecessarily, but she hoped Silent wouldn't consider her thoughts on the incident so useless. 'Barely the skill of a Wolfrider...' She thought glumly as she rolled the rest of her furs together. 'Much less an elf or wolf.'

Silent nodded and slung his fur over his shoulder, and stepped off his perch, seemingly without looking, but he landed on a branch below that didn't even shake from his weight. He kept on that way all the way to the ground, guided by the "sound" of which branches were sturdiest.
Once on terra firma, the quiet one had a drink from his waterbag and had a handful of dried meat while he called Wanderlust.

The tanner landed behind him, shifting quietly as she was greeted by several wolves, brushing past them to tuck away her bundle of furs and skins at the roots of the tree. Guarded by the wolves and the simple wolf scent, they would be very safe. At least she hoped. The pup Snapbone dug his nose under her arm to nip at an exposed skin in the bundle. "Not a plaything," She warned with a swat and flashing eyes. "Find a stick or a nice ravvit." Farpace, now tucked at her side, growled low and rumbling, much to Snapbone's chagrin and whining.
Evenstar patted the young wolf as he retreated, not wanting Softling's wolf-friend to be so scarred by the rejection. She gathered her bow, rubbing the aged wood and taking a drink from her waterbag as well. *Hunt now.* She sent to Farpace, who headbutted her elf-friend affectionately until Evenstar rubbed her muzzle.
Evenstar watched Silent as he called for his wolf-friend. She was certainly not the finest hunter of any of the new holt, but she hoped she could help Silent feel more at home in the hunt. Her tanning and ramblings left her too busied to join many hunts, but it was still a joyous, natural thing for her. How did he feel in the hunt, she wondered, but did not ask, shy in her new role as huntress this night.

Wanderlust arrived shortly, tongue lolling and breath smelling of mouse and squirrel. For a moment, she wondered why her partner had summoned her. He didn't look like he needed her; in fact, he looked quite alert. ** ?** Wanderlust sent. Silent knelt, wrapping his fingers in the fur behind his partner's ears and looking her in the eye. **We hunt,** he said seriously. **.... !!!! [utter incomprehension!]** This wasn't right. Silent never hunted; he was worse than the lowest wolf when it came to it. Wanderlust remembered that much. **We hunt,** Silent repeated firmly, giving his friend's head a small shake for emphasis. **We hunt with Evenstar/[brown-gold scent of leather].** Wanderlust gaped, as much as a wolf could, anyway. Then, slowly, her tail lifted, wagging a little. Okay, so her elf-friend wanted to hunt. She could hunt with him. It might even be nice. **[assent]** she replied. **Good.** Silent stood, picking up his spear, and had another drink of water before hanging his supplies on one of the lower branches. **I think I'm ready,** he sent to the tanner.

Icemark looked up and over as two of his tribemates rose from their day's rest. He'd been up for some time, having spent the sunny afternoon roaming the area around their temporary den and gathering early greens to supplement the night's hunt. He looked at his companion and smiled. Sunsong had joined him in his explorations and even now was concentrating on a handful of seeds she'd collected.
"The others are waking," he said quietly. "They'll be hunting."
"Naturally," Sunsong smiled. She tucked the seeds into her beltpouch and stood up, looking towards Silent and Evenstar. An unlikely duo for hunting, each being of a more mystical bent than the usual hunters. But all Wolfriders felt the thrill. "Bright moons, Silent, Evenstar! Sleep well?"

Tallspear opened his eyes and pushed himself up on one elbow. He looked across the den of bowed branches and saw he was alone--Whirlwind and Stormfire were gone.
The hunter raked his hair out of his eyes and searched for his clothes. He and Whirlwind had shared furs, but that was it; Whirlwind's mood had been sour that morning. Likewise, Stormfire's thoughts were days away. She'd never say so, his dear friend, but she was longing for home. He could see it in her face. She showed the tribe the face they'd come to know well, cool and occasionally smiling; yet there was a sadness in her eyes when she looked northward that made Tallspear's heart ache.
Well, there was nothing to be done for it. If they went back, Sureshot might well send them back out again, so they might as well keep going on. Tallspear finished lacing his boots, picked up his spear, and headed out to see if a hunting party had been put together.
As soon as he came out, he found Stormfire sitting on a rock nearby, sharpening her javelin heads. She saw him and gave him a half-smile. "Ready for a hunt, then?"
"Whenever you are, chieftess," and Tallspear managed a smile.
